The State Dog
Plott hound |plät|
nouna hunting dog with a smooth brindle or black coat and large drooping ears. Developed from German stock, it is the only recognized coonhound not descended from the foxhound. ORIGIN late 18th cent.
In 1750, the two young Plott brothers left Germany and immigrated to America with five Hanoverian Hounds. One brother died during the voyage, but the other settled in North Carolina, raised a family and bred his dogs. Over the next 200 years, the Plott descendents were mountain men who used their dogs to hunt bear and boar. The dogs became known by the family name and were referred to as the Plotts’ hounds.Plotts are eager to please, loyal, intelligent and alert in the home, but are aggressive, bold and fearless while hunting. An athletic breed, they require daily exercise (as in "lots of running"!)
Powerful and well-muscled, the Plott brings big game such as bear or boar to bay or tree with its determination, endurance and courage.
When I ran a picture of "Shiloh" I had a comment from a friend that since this dog was so "gorgeous", they should add it to their list to consider when they are ready to get a dog.
Well, maybe not so fast... Shiloh's owner, Dawg, told me how much energy these dogs have & how much exercise they need. As in, he takes her EVERY day on his 4-wheeler (he tells her to get on & she hops up on the back), up the mountain to let her run... over lots of land & for a long time to wear her out. They seem to have endless energy... not the type that kids can run around the yard, but a couple of hours worth of hard running!
So now you know a bit more about the NC State Dog... and if you have lots of land, lots of time, & lots of energy you may want to consider a Plott.

Yikes! I guess maybe they're not best for the back yard then. I'll have to admire from afar.
I "met" one while vacationing in the Outer Banks and his face was so beautiful that the image has stayed with me for years.
who knew we had a state dog! I don't ever think I've seen one of these.
That dog made me tired just reading about her energy level. lol :) It is a beautiful dog. Wasn't realizing it was the STATE dog, though! :)
Enjoyed your Plott Plug. One interesting note i forgot Sandy, is Shiloh is a Crockett Plott. Named after Taylor Crockett who was friends as well as hunting buddies with the Plott family. Crockett is considered one of the "Big Five" Plott breeders and sustainers of the old time Plott dog. When you see Shiloh, you are seeing what the Plotts looked like 200 years ago. There are no more than 50 "TRUE" Crockett Plott dogs in exisitence. Thanks, Dawg.
